In 2022, an image of Wilde and the quote started spreading online. He died in 1900, and Quote Investigator has found no significant evidence that the quote originated from him. The earliest match was attributed to one of the British author Percy Colson's precepts in 1949: "Always forgive your enemies. Nothing annoys them so intensely." He was supposedly authoring a book about Wilde, which could have caused misattribution. The quotation was reattributed to Wilde in 1954. Snopes rated the attribution as incorrect.
