War Quotes
Two of the best-known lines about war are flagged as misattributed, and both stories are worth knowing.
“In war, truth is the first casualty” is credited to Aeschylus, and sometimes to the US senator Hiram Johnson. It is not in his speeches. The first recorded use Wikiquote found is by Philip Snowden in July 1916, introducing a book by E. D. Morel, and he wrote “it has been said”, so it was probably already going around. Samuel Johnson made the same point in The Idler in 1758, about “the falsehoods which interest dictates and credulity encourages”.
“Men grow tired of sleep, love, singing and dancing, sooner than of war” is credited to Homer, and it is a misquotation of the Iliad (Book 13). In the original, most men prefer those things to war. It is the Trojans who can never get enough of fighting.
I find war detestable but those who praise it without participating in it even more so.
Peace I do not find, and I have no wish to make war; and I fear and hope, and burn and am of ice.
The only people who love a war are those who have never fought in one.
I understand that the bombing ended the war, and I think that it couldn't be helped.
To win the War, to overcome the enemy upon the fields cannot alone ensure the Victory in Peace.
You have taken from me the one privilege of civil war – the power of granting life to the defeated.
For not by numbers of men, nor by measure of body, but by valor of soul is war to be decided.
Empires come and go; so do ideologies and even religions, but war marches on through it all.
We cannot crusade against war without crusading implicitly against the State.
It's odd about war crimes. We seem to have tried people only if they've lost the war.
