If they want peace, they and their relatives must stop the war.
Veterans Day Quotes
Nothing on this page was written for Veterans Day. It is built from four pages, War, Courage, Patriotism and Gratitude, and the mix is not tidy. The war page contains plenty of writers who hated it, and the patriotism page contains Bertrand Russell remarking in 1962 that patriots talk of dying for their country and never of killing for it.
That makes the page more honest than a greeting card and less convenient. If you need a line of thanks, the gratitude entries are the safest place to look. If you want something that sounds like a speech, read the notes first, because some of the best-known patriotic lines here are flagged as misattributed.
Most quoted on veterans day:
Traditional nationalism cannot survive the fissioning of the atom. One world or none.
In adversity it is easy to despise life; he is truly brave who can endure a wretched life.
The brave man, indeed, calls himself lord of the land, through his iron, through his blood.
Good faith and probity are rarely found among the followers of the camp.
Let the man, who would be grateful, think of repaying a kindness, even while receiving it.
There is no such thing as an inevitable war. If war comes it will be from failure of human wisdom.
Every shot has its commission, d'ye see? We must all die at one time, as the saying is.
