Dreams Quotes
The word covers two things, the dreams you have asleep and the ones you have about your future, and this page leans towards the first. Shakespeare has by far the most entries, followed by Tennyson, Yeats and Pessoa. If you came for motivational lines about chasing your goals, you will find fewer of those than you might expect.
What you do find is better sourced than most. Dostoyevsky’s The Dream of a Ridiculous Man (1877) is here, and so is Wittgenstein in Culture and Value (1980): “Man has to awaken to wonder — and so perhaps do peoples. Science is a way of sending him to sleep again.” The line “When the legends die, the dreams end; there is no more greatness” is credited to Tecumseh and is marked disputed.
There is some ill a-brewing towards my rest,
For I did dream of money-bags to-night.
Sleep, that sometimes shuts up sorrow's eye,
Steal me awhile from mine own company.
When in the down I sink my head,
Sleep, Death's twin-brother, times my breath.
Sleep, the fresh dew of languid love, the rain
Whose drops quench kisses till they burn again.
Fly, dotard, fly!
With thy wise dreams and fables of the sky.
Oh! that a dream so sweet, so long enjoy'd,
Should be so sadly, cruelly destroy'd!
Methought I heard a voice cry, "Sleep no more!
Macbeth does murder sleep," the innocent sleep.
