Celebrated reply of the French General (afterwards Marshal) MacMahon after his capture of the Malakhoff redoubt (8 September 1855), when the English commander-in chief sent an aide-de-camp asking if MacMahon could maintain his position, and warning him of the undermining of the fort by the Russians—Dites a votre général, répondit-il, que j'y suis et j'y reste! See: Figaro of 28 October 1893, article by Germain Bapst, published a few days after MacMahon's death; and Roger Alexandre, Musée de la Conversation, 3rd ed. (1897), pp. 436–8. Georg Büchmann, Geflügelte Worte, 19th ed. (1898), p. 498, makes it to have been a pencilled message sent to his own commanding officer. In his own memoirs, however, MacMahon denied having uttered these words

Source: François Semur, «J'y suis, j'y reste», Historia, no 9 (January–February 2013), pp. 49–51 | Cp.
