Joseph Paxton, of the most noted gardeners of the day, entered the service of the Duke of Devonshire as an assistant gardener. In 1826 he was made head-gardener. His name at Chatsworth is chiefly associated with the remarkable palm-house he designed, which was begun in 1836 and finished in 1840.
