I know the bitterness, the disappointments, the time that union activity sometimes requires, with results that are not entirely satisfactory. I know all this well, because I too have been a union activist: you know very well that I do not come from above, I come from below.

Is it right that in Italy, while large monopolies continue to multiply their profits and wealth, workers are left with crumbs? Is it right that workers' wages are below the basic needs of the workers themselves and their families, their children? Is this right? We must talk about this, because this is the task of the trade union.

Profits are rising steadily, while wages are struggling to rise and remain low. What, then, are the consequences of these blows dealt to the CGIL by big capitalism, by splits and divisions among workers? Here they are: the two curves, the curve of profits, which is rising steadily, and the curve of wages, which remains low. | Our cause is truly just, it serves the interests of everyone, the interests of the whole of society, the interests of our children. When the cause is so noble, it deserves to be served, even at the cost of enormous sacrifices.
