Long before the United Nations embraced the principle now known as "responsibility to protect" in cases of genocide crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing, the African Union had already provided in in its constitutive Act that principle. States will no longer therefore hide under the clock of sovereignty to cover up crimes. So Africa is actually a pioneer in this field.
