Now Spring returns; but not to me returns.

Elegy on Spring (1767)

Oft morning dreams presage approaching fate,
For morning dreams, as poets tell, are true.

But evil fortune has decreed,
(The foe of mice as well as men)
The royal mouse at last should bleed,
Should fall—ne'er to arise again.

In every pang that rends the heart
The Man of Sorrows had a part

'Tis very vain for me to boast
How small a price my Bible cost,
The day of judgment will make clear
'Twas very cheap — or very dear
